The Desktop

  General Tips

 

 

 

As we said before the Desktop is the main or starting screen in your computer. It displays a number of ICONS which will allow you to start an application (program) by clicking on them
Most people feel attracted to add “wallpapers”. They will make finding your icons more difficult and they create a unnecessary load on the computer.
If you need to display a favorite photo you may add it as a screen saver.
Expert users keep the number of icons on the desktop to a minimum. All programs should be started from the start button

  Frequently used icons

 

 

 

This icon will open showing the structure of your PC. Your Hard drive (c::\ My drive) your other drives like: D:\ , normally your CD ROM drive. A:\ may show if you have a diskette drive. Subsequent clicking on these drives will show their contents.

This is the icon to open Internet Explorer. This application will take you to the Internet to “browse” through web sites.
AOL users will not be using this application.

 

 

This is the icon for My Documents (truly Your Documents). It is a folder where you should save all letters, photos, music etc. you created or received. It is like the main file drawer in your desk. It should also contain folders only, not individual files or documents..

This icon will open the windows E-MAIL program.
AOL users will not be using this application.

 

 

This is the Recycle Bin. When you delete a file they go to this “trash basket”. If you deleted something in error, you can undelete it double clicking on this icon and following instructions.

This is the icon for Messenger. With this program you can hold instant conversation with other computer users. You can also ask a friend for remote assistance.

 

 

At the bottom of the desktop you may see these small windows indicating programs that are open or minimized.

On the lower right corner of the screen, you will find the time and the day of the week. If you place the mouse on top of the hour you will see the current date. If you double click on the HOUR, a CALENDAR opens. You can go forward and backward in this calendar however you will close the calendar with the X on the upper right corner. Never press OK. This time is the most accurate time in your house. It shows the official  US Gvmt. time (US Naval Observatory).
