How do I write a letter?

In every computer with Windows (all versions: 95, 98, ME, XP) there are at least 2 programs that make writing very easy.

NOTEPAD

WORDPAD

Notepad is the simplest word processing program.
Very practical to write short note, recipes, lists, etc.

To open it go START - ACCESSORIES - NOTEPAD
Click on the white part of the window and start typing.

Wordpad is a second level word processor. It contains several features that allow the writer to format text, change fonts, colors among other features.
It is the recommended application to write letters, memos and documents that you may be sending to others.

To open it go START - ACCESSORIES - WORDPAD

Typing 101

Do not abuse capital letters.
Never use the SPACE BAR to re-space the text. Use the TAB key instead.
When typing you may be tempted to press ENTER as you are getting close to the page right border. We all used to do that when we were using typewriters.
In computers there is no need to enter a CR (carriage return) except when you want to start a new line. The programs will manage the right margin and will start a new line automatically when you reach the right page border.

There are 2 types of CR (carriage return).
ENTER goes to the next line and it is called a HARD NEW LINE.
SHIFT ENTER goes to the new line and it is called SOFT NEW LINE.
Some word processors (including e-mail writing) give you a double space new line with the ENTER and a single space new line with the SHIFT ENTER.

Sample text SHIFT ENTER

As soon as you start a text document you must save the document. See next page for “How do I save and where”?

Advanced Word Processors

Microsoft Word - MS Works Word Processor - Lotus Word Pro - Corel Word Perfect are among the best known advanced word applications.
There is a tendency to use these applications for casual writing. These word processors have great number of options and they allow information exchange among different applications and platforms.
There are a few disadvantages when using these:
1. There are difficult to learn.
2. The documents produced may not be compatible with the setup of other users. (different MS Word versions for example)
3. There will use a large segment of your computer resources.
